Whether you buy your toys new or used, you should clean it first before you give to your children. Some toys can be washed in a washing machine or a dishwasher with regular laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent whereas others need more specific work. If you want to put a toy in the wash, make sure that you read its tag first to make sure that you are not going to destroy it in the cleaning process. If the toy is delicate or it is a large toy (such as an outdoor toy), you might want to clean by hand with hot soapy water.

Other than cleaning, you should sanitize any toys prior to your kids playing with them. You can spray the sanitizer on toys to clean or wipe with disinfecting wipes. By doing this, you are getting rid of any germ that may be on the toys. Even when a toy is new, there is no guarantee that a child who had been sick had not touched it while in the store.

On August 14, 2008, the President signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) into law. Following this, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (SPSC) published a handbook called the “CPSC Handbook for Resale Stores and Product Resellers”. This resellers’ handbook is provided to help sellers of used products understand the new law and existing regulations. Any violations are punishable by law.

What does the New Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) mean to you?

When you buy used toys or toys from resellers, you need to know what you need to avoid because they are deemed dangerous for children. Although the handbook is aimed at teaching resellers, consumers will also benefit from the information in the handbook. You will learn more about product safety and what to watch out for. You have to take matter into your own hands because not all resellers know about the new law and what they can or cannot sell legally. Implementing the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA)

Additionally, three types of phthalates are permanently prohibited in certain toys and child care articles and three other phthalates are prohibited on an interim basis in certain child care articles and children’s product that can be placed in a child’s mouth.
